Lolz Super Club: Hilarious, or the Longest 2 Hours of Your Life?

Don't skip the homework bit, because it's the difference between a hilarious evening out and the most awkward 2 hours of your life.

What you actually get

Comedy club, proper little supper club setup, low tables and lamps and a stage at the front. It’s a genuinely lovely room and it does a good job of not feeling like a theatre with chairs in it.

The drinks are the only thing you actually decide on. It’s $35 for unlimited drinks across the night, which we obviously did, because paying once and then not thinking about it again is very much our approach to a bar. Cocktails on board usually run $13 to $15, so you’re square after three!

The comedians, and the one gamble

Here’s the honest bit. The comedians are the entire experience and you do not get to pick them.

We got very lucky on this one. Emmanuel Sonubi was genuinely, properly hilarious, the kind of set where you’re still quoting bits of it at breakfast. He was worth the night on his own!

Another Lolz we went to was a completely different story. The comedians were truly awful, and people were walking out. Same room, same everything, and it just didn’t land at all.

So the advice writes itself.. have a look at who’s actually on before you commit your evening to it. A quick search of the name will tell you most of what you need to know, and if it’s a bad draw you’ve saved yourself a couple of hours.

Top tip: find out who’s performing before you book, then look them up. The venue is reliably good. The line-up is not.

The food

It was tasty but they were very small portions. That sounds like a complaint and it mostly isn’t.

Small plates are exactly right for what this is. You’re drinking, the lights are down and somebody is doing a bit, so the last thing you want is to be sawing through something enormous in the dark. It’s food to pick at between laughs and on that score it’s spot on!

If you arrive properly starving though, this will not fix you. Eat first, come for the show, and treat the plates as a very good bonus rather than your dinner.

The lighting in there means every photo we took came out looking like a nightclub flyer, so you’ll have to take our word for how it tasted.

Final thoughts

Worth it, 5 out of 5. $35 for as much as you can drink through a couple of hours of stand up is about as good as onboard value gets, and when the line-up lands it’s the best few hours on the ship!

Just do the homework first. We got lucky once and unlucky once, and the difference was entirely down to who was holding the microphone.
