Mee Bold Street, Liverpool… is it worth it?
Aug 2026 · 5 min read · Liverpool, UK
Big portions, fair prices and a fun room, but every single thing we ordered came out of the fryer.
Short answer… yes for the money, no for the food. Which sounds harsh, so I wouldn’t stop reading just yet, because a decent chunk of this is our own fault.
We keep seeing this place when we drive past, and it pops up on TikTok from time to time, so we finally got around to trying it. Mee does Japanese and Thai street food, the menu leans heavier on the Thai side of things, and we went in on a whim for an early tea with no real plan beyond “let’s give this a try”.
That, it turns out, was the problem.
First impressions..
The room is great. Fun decor, good energy, the kind of place where you sit down and immediately feel like your afternoon has got better. Cocktails are £8, which isn’t something I can be mad about, and I won’t lie, they were good.
We both picked the signature flaming one straight away and they’d run out. Not an issue, because there’s a fantastic selection of fruit flavoured margs and I love a marg. We got a lychee and a blueberry, both good if a little too sweet. Would I go back for the margs? No. Would I leave because of them? Also no.
We also ordered water. It never came. Nobody died, but it never came.
We ordered three starters and they were all very batter heavy

Look at that photo. Batter, batter, batter.
In fairness to Mee, the guidance is one or two starters or sides plus a main and rice per person, so three starters between the two of us was going a bit hard, if we’d ever actually made it to mains. We’re usually big eaters. I don’t know if it was the batter overload or something else, I wasn’t full at the end of it, I was just done.
Tod Mun Pla, Thai fishcakes, £6.50. Five of them, which for the price you really can’t complain about, but I’m a quality over quantity raccoon and this did not hit the mark for me. Rubbery, and the flavour was lemongrass and then more lemongrass. No heat behind it, no other flavours that could fight past the lemongrass. One note, held for a very long time.
Gung Chup Pang Tod, street style battered king prawns, £7.50. The prawns themselves were cooked perfectly, which is the hard part and they absolutely nailed it. Then they buried them in batter. Sweet chilli on the side doing the rescue work.
Neux Daed Deiyw, crunchy beef in sweet and spicy sauce, £7.80. Looked the best of the three, all red onion and peppers and shreds of carrot. Then you eat it and the beef is overcooked and completely lost. We passed the plate back and forth trying our best but we just couldn’t finish it. It’s a plate of crunch in a really nice sauce.
Starters: 3 out of 5. Huge plates, real value, and we ate most of it. But we walked out having tasted about a fraction of the menu and not really in the mood for anything else.
And that was the meal. We never got as far as a main. If any of it had been amazing we’d have pushed on and shared a curry and rice, but nothing on that table was making the case for it.
So what should you order?
Here’s the bit that kept nagging at me afterwards. We started strong on starters then had no incentive to push through to the mains. Three plates of batter for under £22 is a lot of food, and it fills you up long before you get anywhere near the part of the menu that’s probably (hopefully) much better.

Flip the menu over and it’s all noodles and curry. Pad Thai and Pad See Ew around £12.50, curries about £12.95, and Khao Soi Gai at £13.50 with a line on the menu claiming it was voted the world’s best soup in 2022. Their claim, not ours, but it’s the one I’d order if we ended up back there. There’s a spice scale running from tingly to fiery, and whole fish served head, body, bone and tail, so the kitchen clearly isn’t scared of flavour. Everything we ordered just went through the fryer first, and the fryer flattens things.
Top tip: one battered thing to share, maximum. Then order off the noodle and curry side, or take the street food platter for two at £12.95 and let them pick for you. Which is exactly what we should have done.
What you’ll actually pay
About £19 each. That’s £21.80 of starters split between two of us, plus a marg each at £8, and no mains. For Bold Street on a weekend that’s not bad at all, and it’s the main reason this isn’t a two.
Worth saying that all these prices are from the August 2026 paper menu, so give it a check before you commit.
Mee Japanese & Thai Street Food, 130 Bold St, Liverpool L1 4JA.
We only ever drive past this one, but if you’re coming into Liverpool for the night, Bold Street is about as central as it gets and there’s no shortage of places to stay within walking distance of it. Plenty to fill the rest of the day with too, before you go and order the curry we never got to.
Quick answers
Is Mee on Bold Street worth it? For the money, maybe. Three starters and two cocktails came to under £40 for the two of us and neither of us wanted anything else afterwards. Just don’t turn up expecting the food to be the best part of the afternoon.
How much is a meal at Mee, Liverpool? Around £19 a head for starters and a drink. Mains are £12.50 to £13.50, so a curry or a noodle dish plus a cocktail lands closer to £21.
What should I order at Mee? Couldn’t tell you from experience, we ate the fried half of the menu. From reading the rest of it while we sat there, I’d point you at the Khao Soi Gai at £13.50 or one of the curries.
Final verdict
Don’t rush. 3 out of 5.
Great room, decent margs, genuinely generous portions for what you pay. The food itself never got going, the fishcakes were the low point, and the water never turned up. Some of that is on us for ordering three fried things in a row, and some of it is on the way the food was prepared.
So, not sure we’ll rush back. But I wouldn’t talk a friend out of it, and if someone was keen to give it a go I’d happily sit in that room again and let them order the curry!
Prices are what we paid in August 2026. Things move, so check before you book.
